Try not to get too bogged down in the details of the cities at this stage - don't forget that you need at least 100 thumbnails exploring all the cities, so at the early stages you should keep your sketches, well... sketchy! Explore shapes, negative spaces, line etc.
It would be good to get some influence maps together to give you some reference points. Also, maybe either write or highlight from the text, the bits of description that you are being influenced by, and get them onto your blog so that your reader can see what you are basing your ideas on. Don't forget to label (and number) your sketches too, so that we can see which cities your sketches relate to...
